Insulin injections and ways to minimize pain

2025-04-08 11:23:35 Back to list

Steps for injecting insulin:

1. First, prepare the items needed for injection, including: insulin pen, sufficient amount of insulin, new and unused insulin needles, alcohol cotton, and a special box for recycling insulin needles.

2. Before injection, wash your hands with water or soap to keep them clean and reduce the chance of infection.

3. Then, open the insulin pen and load the insulin into the insulin pen. Wipe the front end of the insulin pen with alcohol cotton wool and let it dry. Adjust the insulin scale so that there is no gap between the insulin and the insulin pen in close contact.

4. Open the insulin needle package and install the insulin needle into the insulin pen and screw it tightly.

5. Adjust the insulin pen volume to 2 units, turn the needle upright and upward, flick the needle to bring the air bubbles close to the needle, and then administer 2 units of insulin to expel the air bubbles.

Note: If the insulin has just been taken out of the refrigerator, wait for the insulin to come to room temperature, then gently turn it up and down several times to distribute the insulin evenly, and then follow the above steps to expel the air bubbles. If there are still air bubbles after one operation, repeat this operation until there are no air bubbles.

6. Rotate the insulin pen scale to adjust the dose of insulin to be injected, and then inject vertically (or 80°~90°) in the outer upper arm or around the navel or the outer buttock or the outer thigh subcutaneously, inject slowly, and then pull out the pen after the injection after keeping it in the current position for about 10 seconds in order to prevent too much insulin from overflowing.

Note: Details such as how to choose the injection site and how to minimize injection pain are detailed in the following subsections.

7. After gently pulling out the insulin pen vertically, remove the insulin needle carefully and put it into the special box for recycling.

Note: Used insulin does not need to be stored at low temperature, but should be stored at room temperature (about 25℃). If any blood or insulin spills out of the skin, wipe it gently with alcohol cotton.

Choice of insulin injection sites

The injection sites to choose from are: the outside of the upper arm, the outside of the thigh, around the belly button, and the outside of the buttocks.

The speed of insulin absorption in the above areas is from fastest to slowest: around the belly button, outside of the upper arm, outside of the thigh, outside of the buttocks.

1. Around the belly button: Fist clenched tightly to cover the belly button, this range is not injected, around the fist around the top and bottom of the left and right areas of the injection.

2. Lateral aspect of the upper arm: the outer back of the deltoid muscle, taking care to avoid the deltoid muscle and the elbow.

3. Lateral thighs: avoid the groin and inner side.

4. Lateral buttocks: upper outer quarter.

Note:Try to rotate the injection sites as regularly as possible to avoid swelling and subcutaneous fat growth (e.g., inject the lateral thighs every Monday before breakfast, inject around the navel every Tuesday before breakfast, etc.), and multiple injections at each injection site should be separated by more than 1-2 finger widths.

Tips to avoid pain with insulin injection

1. Insert the insulin needle quickly;

2. try not to reuse insulin needles and use a new one each time.

3. cold injections are irritating, perform insulin injections at room temperature, insulin removed from cold should be left at room temperature until it reaches room temperature;

4. Keep the muscles relaxed during injection and inject to the depth of subcutaneous fat tissue;

5. The injection site should be rotated;

6. always remember to empty any air bubbles in the insulin tube;

7. wait for the alcohol to dry to minimize irritation.
